Editor’s note: In today’s message, Glenn Monroe, CEO of Meridian Bank Texas, shares his view on the key to MBTX’s successful foundation. Glenn has led the bank since its launch in May 2006. Along with his 25 years of commercial banking experience, he has a unique athletic background—a position in professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians. Glenn holds a BBA and an MBA from TCU and is a member of the TCU Letterman’s Hall of Fame.
Measuring Success Through Teamwork
By Glenn Monroe
Teamwork is essential to every industry, every business. I’ve learned through various roles--in the competitive sports arena and with the region’s largest banks—one fact never changes: The accomplishments of a team always surpass those of an individual. This concept has been fundamental to building a foundation for success here at Meridian Bank Texas.
We’ve had a team approach from the very beginning. Starting our bank wasn’t just one person’s idea--rather, a group of experienced bankers collectively wanted to build a bank around personal customer service and traditional banking. We felt we could assemble a group of banking professionals who had, over time, come to recognize the inherent flaws playing out in larger banks. As seen with many of our competitors, solely measuring performance by numbers, rather than measuring the true value of the team’s contribution, takes a toll on their relations with customers and employees alike.
In the three years since our launch, our approach to teamwork has extended through our people. We try to tap into our employees’ potential by pairing them with equally engaged individuals who share the same vision. In doing so, we hope to provide them the support they need to be successful, being mindful of communicating our confidence in their performance. And based on the inquiries we receive from local bankers, it’s clear that we must be on to something. It seems that MBTX has become an employer of choice for the number of bankers who’ve grown weary of big bank bureaucracy and a “one-size-fits-all” philosophy.
Many banking organizations pay lip service to a team concept; few banking organizations are successful at making it part of their culture. When it comes to the number of locations, the number of products and services offered, and high advertising budgets, we cannot compete with the Bank of Americas, the Wells Fargos, or event the Frost Banks in our market. We can compete when it comes to our team. Through our team we win when it comes to excellent customer service.
Teamwork has been the cornerstone of Meridian Bank Texas. From my perspective, each of us, in the Marquette organization, can better compete with larger financial institutions when our approach leverages our team as a whole.
